Steam Train Emerging from Tunnel into Snow in beside a fogbound harbor mouth near Oslo

Steam Train Emerging from Tunnel into Snow

by Edna Curtis

Deep indigo shadows dominate the harbor mouth near Oslo as a vintage steam train pushes out of a dark tunnel into the falling snow. The locomotive glows with a warm, amber light from its engine, creating a stark contrast against the cold blue twilight of the polar night. A soft white plume of steam rises and mixes with the fog, partially obscuring the iron wheels and heavy coal tender. The tracks cut through a blanket of fresh powder, leading toward the open water where the sky remains perfectly clear and dark. Rim light traces the curved edges of the smokestack and the metal grating on the cab roof. The train's brass fittings catch a faint reflection of the fading daylight, while the snowflakes drift silently around the heavy steel frame. at the edge is the crisp white snow clinging to the dark, riveted side of the tender.
