Late afternoon light reflects off the wet asphalt at a street corner in Gómez Palacio. A circular metal manhole cover sits slightly raised, releasing thick plumes of steam that drift into the low-hanging grey clouds. Raindrops ripple across the dark pavement, distorting the faint glow of a nearby café window. The dry season air hangs heavy, yet the ground remains slick with recent showers. Steam rises steadily from the grate, against the cool, dull tones of the wet concrete and metal surfaces. A puddle near the curb mirrors the overcast sky, holding the reflection of a brick wall and a hanging sign in its still, dark surface.
