A wet street in Kaohsiung’s Gaoxiong District reflects the first light after rain, with puddles mirroring the neon signs of a nearby pharmacy and the sleek curves of a passing electric scooter. The scene is anchored by a small, open-fronted tea stall where a vendor in a translucent raincoat wipes down a stainless steel counter. Beside a steaming clay pot, a few chipped porcelain cups hold the dark, tannic remnants of oolong tea, their stains against the slick, rain-slicked pavement. Overhead, tangled power lines cut through the gray sky, framing the steam rising from the stall against the backdrop of high-rise apartments.
