Stained Glass Light on Synagogue Pews in inside a timber synagogue hall in Luanda

Stained Glass Light on Synagogue Pews

by Roger Blair

Amber and crimson hues from a stained glass window spill across the dark timber floor of a synagogue hall in Luanda. Low-angle perspective emphasizes the heavy, polished benches arranged in parallel rows, their wood grain catching the soft, diffused glow of the rainy afternoon. The light fractures into geometric shards of red, blue, and gold, resting on the seats and the narrow aisle between them. Dust motes hang suspended in the vertical beams cutting through the dim interior. The timber walls rise steeply, framing the colored illumination that pools on the floorboards near the foreground. A final streak of crimson light marks the edge of the nearest pew, defining the boundary between shadow and color.
