Autumn Wine Shop Sand Floor Surreal in inside a stockroom behind the sales floor in Gastown, Vancouver

Autumn Wine Shop Sand Floor Surreal

by Irina Spears

Amber afternoon light floods the narrow aisle of a Gastown wine stockroom, illuminating rows of cardboard cases and handwritten shelf talkers against exposed brick. The honey-colored glow rests on dusty metal shelving units packed with bottles. Suddenly, the polished tile floor beneath the racks dissolves into a smooth, undulating sand dune that rises directly from the shop's foundation. Fine grains of pale gold scatter across the bottom of the wine crates, merging seamlessly with the concrete where the tiles end. The impossible dune reflects the same warm window light as the surrounding surfaces, casting soft shadows from the shelves onto the shifting sand. One bottle stands upright on the grainy slope, its glass catching the fading sun.
