Sea Glass and Rust After Rain Study

by Gabriela Emerson

Soft overcast light from a nearby window washes over a collection of smoothed sea glass fragments and corroded metal shards resting on a neutral surface. The glass displays muted hues of teal, amber, and seafoam, their edges worn smooth by the Pacific waters near Grey Lynn. Patches of orange and brown rust texture the metal pieces, creating a rough contrast against the glossy, wet-looking stone. Water droplets rest on the glass, catching the diffused midmorning glow and highlighting the translucency of the material. The composition remains minimal, focusing entirely on the tactile interplay between the organic erosion of the glass and the chemical decay of the rust. A small cluster of amber glass rests against a jagged edge of oxidized iron, showing the sharp boundary between the two textures.
