Rusty Hooks in Monrovia Fish Hall

Honeyed evening light spills across the high ceiling of a turbine hall near Monrovia, illuminating rows of rusted metal hooks hanging from corroded chains. The air hangs heavy with the damp weight of the wet season, evidenced by the sheen of moisture on the concrete floor and the peeling paint on the exposed steel beams. Large industrial fans stand silent against the far wall, their blades coated in a layer of fine dust and salt. The rust on the hooks ranges from deep orange flakes to dark, flaky patches, catching the low-angle sun. Water stains streak down the rough concrete walls, marking the history of high tides and heavy rain. One hook at the edge of the frame reflects the dying light, its sharp point jutting into the dimming space.
