Rusted Portcullis in Dappled Late Autumn Light

by Jeremy Lucero

Heavy iron bars of a portcullis hang permanently halfway down within a stone passageway near Bradford, their surfaces coated in deep orange rust. Late autumn leaves, turning brown and brittle, filter the afternoon light into shifting patches across the cold masonry. The sky outside remains a flat, heavy gray, pressing against the archway. A glass pane set into the lower wall reflects the stone floor and the rusted metal, creating a mirrored composition that doubles the texture of decay. The light catches the rough grain of the stone while shadows pool in the crevices of the gate. One flake of paint rests on the lower rail.
