Ruined Castle Keep in Concrete Lobby
by Mei Huber
Bright monsoon daylight floods a ribbed concrete lobby in Port Moresby, where the structural ribs converge sharply toward a distant vanishing point. At the center stands a weathered castle keep, its roof entirely missing to reveal the open sky above. The rough, grey concrete walls of the lobby frame the ancient stone structure, creating a stark contrast between modern industrial geometry and medieval masonry. Sunlight strikes the exposed stone blocks, highlighting their pitted texture and moss-stained crevices. The sky visible through the missing roof is a vivid, cloudless blue, matching the intensity of the afternoon light. Deep shadows fall across the floor, showing the height of the walls and the isolation of the ruin within the modern space. One crack runs vertically through the base of the keep, exposing the raw aggregate beneath the surface.
