Rope Bridge Over Jungle Gorge at First Light

by Joshua Merritt

Cold silver dawn light washes over a sturdy rope bridge spanning a deep jungle gorge near Dar es Salaam. Thick hemp ropes form the handrails and floor, their fibers rough and weathered against the cool morning air. Below, the gorge walls rise steeply, covered in dense green foliage that fades into a soft, low-hanging haze on the horizon. The symmetrical lines of the bridge converge toward the center, creating a precise visual axis through the misty landscape. Dry season grasses rest on the rocky edges, their golden tips catching the faint glow of the rising sun. One wooden plank on the left edge shows a crack running lengthwise, revealing the grain beneath the varnish.
