Rice Marker Flags in Rio Monsoon Evening

by Tristan Buckley

Steel-blue ambient light washes over a harvested grain field near Rio de Janeiro as wet-season clouds settle low on the horizon. Tall bamboo poles stand in loose rows, each topped with a small, saturated marker flag fluttering sharply in the monsoon wind. The fabric ripples in tight, rhythmic waves, catching the fading evening glow against the muted grey of the wet soil. Distant haze softens the tree line, creating layers of depth that recede into the darkening landscape. The flags, painted in red and yellow, vibrate slightly at their tips, while the damp earth beneath them holds the imprint of recent seasonal labor. A wet leaf rests on the base of the nearest pole.
