Rice Husking Mill Chaff Blowing in Richmond Hill Hall in inside a tea-processing hall in Richmond Hill

Rice Husking Mill Chaff Blowing in Richmond Hill Hall

by Larry Nichols

Late afternoon sunlight cuts through the high ceiling of a Richmond Hill tea-processing hall, illuminating a massive industrial rice husking mill. Dust and chaff erupt violently from the rear door, forming a dense, swirling cloud that hangs low against the gray sky visible through the open bay. The machinery, painted in faded industrial gray, stands heavy and severe against the bright, crisp light. Fine particles of husk float in the air, catching the high-altitude sun and creating a hazy, textured veil over the concrete floor. Low-hanging clouds outside press against the upper windows, against the mechanical energy inside. The chaff settles slowly on the metal grates near the machine base, marking the boundary between the active process and the quiet interior.
