Rice Mill in Tea Hall with Uphill Water
by Kelly Austin
Damp concrete floors reflect the flat noon glare inside a tea-processing hall in Jiangxi, where a rice husking mill operates with chaff blowing out the rear door. Vapor hangs low over the wet ground, clinging to the rough textures of machinery and walls. In the impossible reality of this moment, a stream of water flows uphill along a visible slope, defying gravity to pool at the highest point near the ceiling beams. The water moves steadily, a solid, transparent ribbon against the industrial gray. Heavy machinery sits idle beside the active stream, its metal surfaces dull with moisture. The scene remains grounded in labor-hardened realism despite the surreal physics, with chaff motes suspended in the air near the open door. A reflection of the uphill water shimmers on the lowest wet patch of floor, mirroring the impossible ascent.
