Steam Pipes in Santa Cruz Tea Mill

by Raymond Landers

Hard white midmorning light floods a wide industrial corridor, illuminating dust motes suspended in the air. Massive steel pipes, wrapped in thick gray insulation, run parallel along the concrete walls, their metallic surfaces reflecting the bright glare. Steam curls lazily from connection points, mixing with the fine particulate haze that drifts through shafts of illumination. The floor is smooth gray concrete, marked by faint tire tracks and oil stains. Overhead, a grid of structural beams supports the ceiling, creating a rhythmic pattern of shadows that stretches down the length of the hall. The perspective draws toward the vanishing point where the pipes disappear into the distance. One condensation drip hangs from a pipe flange, catching the light before falling to the floor.
