Red Clay Termite Mounds at Sunset Wind in on a wind-scoured ridge near Jakarta

Red Clay Termite Mounds at Sunset Wind

by Carla Kerr

Deep orange light strikes the rough, conical surfaces of termite mounds rising from a wind-scoured ridge. The hardened red clay shows vertical fissures where monsoon rains have cut through the crust. Flattened grass blades lie dark against the earth, bent sideways by a steady breeze that blurs their tips. Golden beams cut through the air, illuminating fine dust swirling around the base of the largest mound. The texture of the soil appears porous and eroded under the heavy monsoon sky. Shadows stretch long across the foreground, marking the low angle of the setting sun. No animals appear, only the patient stillness of the mounds standing against the gusts.
