Rajasthani Haveli Mirror Facade at Dawn

by Connie Shelton

Deep shadows cloak the colonnaded facade of a Rajasthani haveli while a thin rim of pale light traces the intricate mirror-work embedded in the stone. The turn of seasons hangs heavy in the air, evidenced by the muted, gray overcast sky that presses low against the architectural details. Rows of columns stretch horizontally, their surfaces rough and weathered, against the sharp, fragmented reflections of the tiny glass pieces set into the walls. The light catches only the highest edges of the mirrors, creating a scattered path of silver sparks against the dark, matte stone. At the base of the wall, a single shadow stretches long across the ground, defining the edge where the structure meets the earth.
