Rain-slicked Doorway in Luxor

by Bette Raymond

Dusk settles over a narrow Luxor alley as light rain slicks the beige stucco walls, turning the air hazy and gray. A weathered wooden door, its paint peeling to reveal layers of ochre and white, stands slightly ajar, revealing the warm glow of a shop interior. Rust bleeds from the hinge screws, staining the wood below. On a small, rain-spotted window box perched just inside the threshold, a simple clay teapot sits beside a comb, their surfaces catching the damp air. Beyond the door, a blue floral pattern on a porcelain vase adds a splash of color against the muted tones of the street.
