Pruning Fire Smoke Over Frozen Vineyard Grass in between vineyard trellises in British Columbia

Pruning Fire Smoke Over Frozen Vineyard Grass

by Alana Shelton

Thick gray smoke rises from a small, controlled fire burning at the base of a dormant grapevine trellis. The flames lick at dry, brown brush against a backdrop of ice-crusted green grass that refuses to fully thaw. Overcast skies cast a flat, cool light that clashes with the warm orange glow of the burning wood. Heavy, slate-gray clouds hang low above the rows of twisted vines stretching into the distance. Rusty metal wires tension between wooden posts, framing the small blaze. The ground remains hard and frozen, showing no sign of soft earth beneath the frost. A thin wisp of smoke drifts left, bending slightly before vanishing into the heavy, static air.
