Peregrine Falcon Mid Stoop Winter Night
by Vicki Floyd
A sweeping beam of artificial light cuts through the pitch-black night, illuminating a peregrine falcon locked in a steep dive. The bird's grey and white plumage ripples as wind whips its feathers back against its body. Below, a blurred expanse of snow-covered ground stretches into the darkness, marked only by the faint glow of the lighthouse beam. The falcon's sharp yellow beak and intense black eye stand out against the cool, monochromatic tones of the winter scene. The light catches the texture of the feathers, highlighting the aerodynamic tension of the stoop. Behind the bird, the darkness is absolute, save for the rhythmic sweep of the lighthouse beam that briefly reveals the falling speed. at the edge is the sharp contrast between the illuminated, speeding bird and the deep, unlit void surrounding it.
