Peeling Paint Layers on Frosty Window in along a frost-edged windowpane in Stellenbosch

Peeling Paint Layers on Frosty Window

by Clinton Dickerson

Golden hour light floods the frame, turning the air inside the Stellenbosch room into thick honey. A patch of white paint flakes away from the window frame, exposing rough gray undercoats and a faint hint of older red beneath. Tiny ice crystals rest on the glass edge, their sharp geometric shapes against the soft, crumbling texture of the dried plaster. Condensation beads form a scattered mosaic on the nearby pane, catching the low sun and scattering it into tiny prisms. The paint curls like dry skin, revealing the history of the wall's surface in a tactile display of decay. One shard of flaked white paint rests on the sill, its jagged edge glowing against the shadowed wood.
