Ocean Sunfish Dappled in Croatian Spring Waters in in Croatia

Ocean Sunfish Dappled in Croatian Spring Waters

by Tyrone Melton

Sunlight fractures into shifting patterns of gold and green across the pale, textured skin of a mola mola floating near the surface. The massive fish dominates the frame, its circular dorsal fin standing stiff against the clear Adriatic blue. Tiny suspended particles glitter like scattered diamond dust in the water column, catching the late-afternoon rays that filter down from above. The background dissolves into a soft, out-of-focus blur of deeper azure, isolating the creature in a moment of stillness. Fine ripples distort the light on the sunfish's rough, sandpaper-like flank, while the water remains calm and cool under the early spring sky. One beam of light illuminates a patch of barnacle-encrusted scale near the tail.
