Night Shift Smelter Yard Hefei Winter
by Jimmie Doyle
Neon-blue light washes over a smelter yard on a quarry ledge near Hefei, illuminating fine dust suspended in the air. Stacked wooden pallets form dark, rigid blocks against the glow, their rough grain catching the artificial illumination. The ground is a mix of gravel and industrial debris, scattered with faint tracks from heavy machinery. Shadows stretch long and sharp across the uneven terrain, defined by the harsh overhead lamps. Early winter leaves the air crisp, visible in the way the dust particles hang motionless in the light shafts. Metal structures loom in the background, their surfaces dull and textured with grime. A lone figure stands near the pallets, their silhouette defined by the stark contrast between the bright neon and the deep black of the night. at the edge is the faint orange ember glowing on a distant furnace, a small point of heat against the cold blue light.
