Dawn Light Over Aluminum Smelter Cells in in a turbine hall near Novara

Dawn Light Over Aluminum Smelter Cells

by Juanita Gutierrez

Soft, gray overcast light falls through the high windows of a vast turbine hall near Novara, illuminating rows of rectangular aluminum smelter cells stretching into the distance. The concrete floor bears the scuff marks of heavy industry, while the metallic surfaces of the electrolytic tanks reflect the muted sky above. Early autumn air hangs still, visible only in the way the cool light touches the rough edges of the machinery. Converging lines of the building's structure draw toward a distant vanishing point where the cells disappear into shadow. The heavy, industrial grit of the space is etched into the textures of rusted steel and weathered paint. A faint dusting of oxidized aluminum powder rests on the lower lip of the nearest tank.
