Nanjing Bakery Tarts Water Flows Uphill in inside a bright retail aisle in Nanjing

Nanjing Bakery Tarts Water Flows Uphill

by Zoe McDaniel

Deep night settles over a Nanjing bakery aisle where bright firelight warmth clashes with the dark sky above. A symmetrical glass case displays rows of fruit tarts and stacks of takeaway cake boxes. Along the polished wooden slope inside the display, clear water defies gravity, flowing upward in a steady stream. The liquid pools at the very highest point of the case, gathering beneath the tray labels. Lamplight settles into the corners, highlighting the glossy glaze on the pastries and the condensation on the glass. The water line creates a sharp, silver edge against the golden crusts of the tarts. One droplet hangs from the rim of the highest pool, suspended in the impossible ascent.
