Lantern Trail in Temple Courtyard

by Leonard McLaughlin

A long exposure streak of amber light cuts across the dark surface of a lake within a temple courtyard near Dongshan. The water reflects the crisp, high-altitude late afternoon sun, creating sharp contrasts against the humid air that hangs heavy after rain. Identical wooden doors line both sides of a corridor that should contain rooms, yet they remain empty voids facing the water. The lantern's path forms a perfect, continuous curve over the black water, suggesting motion that defies the stillness of the stone pavement. Wet stones glisten under the golden light, while the endless row of doors creates a rhythmic, impossible architecture against the natural landscape. at the edge shows the light trail ending abruptly at the edge of a stone step.
