Amber Beacons and Floating Fruit Over Lanzhou Dam

Rich amber sunset light floods the concrete observation deck of a Lanzhou dam spillway, casting long, sharp shadows from the rotating beacons. The low angle emphasizes the civic-scale austerity of the gray stone structure against a monsoon sky that has defied physics. Giant, suspended oranges and lanterns hang motionless in the air above the railing, their smooth, waxy skins glowing with the same honeyed light as the setting sun. Rain-slicked surfaces reflect the amber glow, while the massive fruit appear heavy enough to pull at the atmosphere. One orange rests precariously on the wet railing edge, its stem pointing toward the impossible cluster above.
