Melting Mail Cubbies in Merida Ghost Town

by Paisley Zhang

Ivy clings to crumbling masonry walls beside a weathered post office structure in Merida, Venezuela. Bright afternoon light floods the open-air ruin, illuminating rows of wooden mail cubbies filled with envelopes. The upper slots hold crisp paper, but the bottom cubbies transform into a surreal sight where the wood and paper soften and drip like warm wax. Thick, amber-colored pools of melted material gather on the stone floor beneath the slots. Damp air seems trapped within the stone crevices, highlighting the texture of the moss and the smooth, viscous flow of the impossible substance. one drop of the melting mixture hangs from the edge of the lowest drawer, poised to fall onto the dusty ground.
