Madrone Tree Peeling Bark in Spring Meadow in in a bloom-heavy meadow in Canada

Madrone Tree Peeling Bark in Spring Meadow

by Danielle West

Pale green grass carpets a wide meadow where a mature madrone tree stands with its distinctive reddish-orange bark peeling in papery strips. Late snowflakes drift down through the bright, flat noon light, dusting the vibrant red trunk and the surrounding low-lying vegetation. The sky above is a washed-out white, diffusing the harsh sunlight across the landscape. Small clusters of pink and white wildflowers push through the melting snow near the tree's base. The rough, papery texture of the bark contrasts sharply with the soft, falling snow and the smooth, emerging petals. A few snowflakes rest on the lower branches, clinging briefly before melting into the warm wood grain.
