Steel-blue twilight washes the remote ferry crossing near Oxford, where a heavy steam locomotive rests on a circular railroad turntable. Two figures in thick wool coats and flat caps push against the spokes, their breathless effort visible as they rotate the massive iron wheel. Dust hangs low above the damp ground, catching the fading light in a thick, golden haze. The converging lines of the tracks stretch toward a vanishing point, drawing the eye past the rusted metal grating to the dark water beyond. Autumn leaves, brown and brittle, rest on the edges of the gravel bed. at the edge is the deep shadow of a wheel rim falling across the wet stone beneath the locomotive's driving gear.
