Hand-Powered Locomotive Turntable in West Virginia Autumn

by Roberto Freeman

Flat noon light washes over a rusted iron turntable where a heavy steam locomotive sits centered on the rotating pit. Late autumn leaves in shades of burnt orange and brown carpet the gravel tracks leading up to the mechanism. A worker in a thick wool coat grips a wooden hand crank, turning the massive steel platform slowly. Light drizzle creates a thin sheen on the dark metal rails and the wet gravel, reflecting the gray sky. The switchback tracks curve sharply into the frame, guiding the eye directly to the turning engine. Rust streaks run down the side of the locomotive's boiler, against the deep green moss growing on the concrete base. The wooden handles of the crank show worn varnish from years of use.
