Trash Rack Leaves After Storm in CAR in beside a water tower ladder in Central African Republic

Trash Rack Leaves After Storm in CAR

by Leo Stanley

Heavy rain has filled the air with suspended moisture, catching the cool blue glow of the twilight sky. A massive metal trash rack, designed to filter the reservoir intake, stands vertically against the wet concrete of a water tower base. Its horizontal bars are clogged with a thick mat of wet leaves, palm fronds, and river debris swept up by the recent gale. Utility lights mounted on the structure cast a stark, artificial yellow beam that reflects off the slick metal and the damp ground. The low angle emphasizes the towering ladder running up the side of the concrete tower, its rungs disappearing into the darkening sky. The heavy, saturated colors of the vegetation contrast sharply with the gray industrial surfaces. One rusted bolt on the lower frame catches the light, marking the junction where the man-made structure meets the wild flood of the monsoon.
