Iceland Horse Race Beach Tidal Inlet

Wet black sand stretches beneath hooves pounding the tidal flat near a narrow inlet. Early spring thaw leaves patches of slush and melting snow clinging to the dunes in the background. Heavy, dramatic clouds hang low, casting a diffuse, gray reflected light off the receding water. Four Icelandic horses gallop in a tight pack, their thick winter coats ruffled by motion. The low angle emphasizes the power of their legs churning the mud. A dark shadow falls across the wet ground, mirroring the swift movement of the lead animal's flank against the pale, frothy edge of the surf.
