Honey Light in Kabul Grain Elevator Turbine Hall

by Dwight Silva

Warm honey-colored light pours through high rectangular windows, illuminating dust motes that hang suspended in the still air of a vast industrial hall. The space, repurposed from a grain elevator structure, reveals exposed concrete pillars and steel framework supporting a massive hydroelectric turbine assembly at the far end. Converging lines of the ceiling beams draw toward the vanishing point where the heavy machinery rests. Clean metal surfaces reflect the fading afternoon glow, against the rougher texture of the aged brick walls. Early autumn shadows stretch long across the concrete floor, highlighting the wear on the industrial flooring. A faint layer of dry dust coats the lower edges of the steel beams, showing the restrained clutter and labor-hardened reality of this functional space.
