Herb Planter in Halifax

by Lewis Wiggins

A narrow, salt-sprayed service alley in Halifax’s Historic District glows under the flat, diffuse light of a winter noon, where the brickwork is stained dark with moisture and sea salt. A heavy iron door latch, pitted with rust, hangs on a chipped white-painted steel door, against the rough, grey sandstone of the adjacent building. Beside it, a faded green herb planter sits on a concrete step, its dormant roots visible in the dry soil, while a discarded ash shovel leans against a stack of pallets, its wooden handle worn smooth by years of use.
