Wet Clothesline in Halifax

A narrow Halifax laneway between grey sandstone row houses glows with diffused winter light, the sky a flat sheet of white above. A rusted metal clothesline stretches diagonally across the frame, holding a single damp red wool sweater that drapes heavily against the chill. Below, a stone step leads to a basement door, where a pair of heavy rubber boots sits next to a discarded plastic bag. The pavement is slick with meltwater, reflecting the dull sky and the rough texture of the masonry. A small, deflated kite lies tangled in the wet grass at the edge of the frame, its fabric stiff with frost.
