Porch Entry in Halifax

by Betty Cross

Rain-slicked cobblestones in Halifax’s historic district reflect the deep indigo sky as blue hour settles over the waterfront. A weathered wooden umbrella stand, saturated from the recent storm, sits on a narrow porch ledge beside a peeling white door. Ivy vines cling tightly to the rough granite wall, their dark leaves against the wet stone. Inside the dimly lit entryway, a single wall hook holds a heavy wool coat, its fabric absorbing the ambient light. The quiet tension between the cold, damp exterior and the warm, sheltered interior, with no people present, only the lingering evidence of recent activity and the steady drip of water from the eaves onto the stone.
