Hakka Earthen House Vaulted Atrium Evening Glow in inside a vaulted atrium in Tuni

Hakka Earthen House Vaulted Atrium Evening Glow

by Christy Langley

Rust-hued earthen walls curve upward to form a massive vaulted atrium within the circular Hakka dwelling. The rough, textured mud surfaces absorb the fading blue twilight and the warm sodium-vapor glow from unseen fixtures. Thick pillars of rammed earth support the high ceiling, their uneven finish catching the low light. Humid air hangs heavy, visible as a soft haze diffusing the golden glow against the deepening shadows of the dry season. A narrow stone path winds across the damp, packed dirt floor, leading toward the darkened perimeter. at the edge shows a faint, golden reflection on a wet patch of the earthen floor near the base of a central column.
