Hakka Earthen House Skylit Lazienki Warsaw

by Gene Ross

Thick, textured walls of yellow-brown Hakka earth curve inward to form a circular interior space within the stone passageways of Lazienki Park in Warsaw. Golden hour sunlight slants through a high skylight, illuminating dust particles suspended in the humid air. Heavy, dark smoke pours downward from the ceiling like thick black liquid, pooling on the rough stone floor and clinging to the earthen surfaces. Long shadows stretch across the ground from the low sun angle. The contrast between the organic earth structure and the rigid park architecture creates a distinct spatial tension. One droplet of condensed moisture hangs from the rim of the skylight frame, reflecting the falling smoke.
