Gustnado swirling through marine fog and leaves

by Eliana Dickerson

Pale gray dust and debris form a tight, vertical column rising from the damp ground near the storm's edge. The funnel twists through low marine fog that softens the distant Nashville horizon. Flat noon light falls through overhead oak leaves, casting sharp, shifting patches of brightness across the swirling vortex. Brown leaves skitter rapidly along the forest floor, caught in the sudden outflow. The ground appears dark and saturated with monsoon rain, reflecting the dull sky. A thin layer of moisture rests on the nearest branches, glistening where the dappled sun hits them. The base of the vortex kicks up small stones and twigs in a chaotic spiral against the stillness of the surrounding fog.
