Gustnado Swirling Near Jounieh at Blue Hour
by Jon Sawyer
Cool blue twilight washes the Lebanese coast near Jounieh as a narrow, ground-based vortex spins with violent momentum. The funnel, a tight column of churning dust and debris, anchors firmly against the darkening hillside. Cool ambient light reflects off the wet asphalt of a nearby road, creating sharp, streaky highlights where the wind tears at loose stones. The sky above holds a gradient of deep indigo fading into charcoal, devoid of stars but heavy with storm clouds. To the right, olive trees bend sharply under the force of the gale, their leaves a blur of motion against the solid rock. The vortex rises just above the pavement, its base obscured by a swirling cloud of brown grit that contrasts with the cool tones of the evening air. A faint red taillight from a distant car streaks horizontally in the background, showing the stillness of the observer against the moving chaos.
