Cooling Iron Castings in Irkutsk Turbine Hall
by Violet Nolan
Rows of heavy cast iron components line the vast turbine hall near Irkutsk, cooling under the glow of suspended string lights. The blue hour sky falls through high windows, casting a deep indigo hue across the concrete floor and the matte black surfaces of the metal pieces. Early spring air settles in the space, visible only through the stillness of the objects and the dramatic, cloud-streaked sky reflected in the polished sections of the iron. The symmetrical arrangement creates a rhythmic pattern of dark masses stretching into the distance. Overhead, the string lights emit a warm amber glow that contrasts sharply with the cool twilight, highlighting the rough texture of the casting seams and the smooth curves of the industrial forms. The final shadow falls along the base of the nearest ingot, marking the edge where light meets the heavy floor.
