Greased Penstock Joint in Scottish Sleet in along a dam spillway in the Scottish Isles

Greased Penstock Joint in Scottish Sleet

by Kai Hale

Heavy steel plates of a penstock expansion joint dominate the frame, their surfaces slick with a thick layer of fresh, pale grease. Sleet accumulates on the horizontal ridges, melting instantly where the lubricant remains exposed. Harsh white floodlights cut through the deep night, reflecting off the wet metal and the falling rain. In the background, faint red warning beacons pulse against the heavy, charcoal overcast sky. The rust-colored bolts contrast with the silver sheen of the wet steel. Water droplets slide down the vertical seams, leaving dark trails on the lubricated joints. one drop of grease rests on the edge of the upper flange, catching the artificial light before falling into the shadowed spillway below.
