Hundreds of vermilion torii gates line a narrow path inside a candlelit nave in Osaka, their lacquered wood reflecting the warm glow of nearby flames. North-window sidelight streams across the floor, casting long, quiet shadows that stretch along the rough plaster walls. The dry season air leaves the surfaces clear of dust, highlighting the grain of the aged timber. A wooden frame within the foreground archway creates a window into the rows of gates, showing the depth of the corridor. The red pillars stand in rhythmic repetition, their tops reaching toward the darkened ceiling beams. One flicker from a candle on a low stone pedestal casts a sharp, dancing shadow against the base of the nearest gate.
