Giant Flamingo Wades Observatory Cedar Needles
by Ariana Rocha
Bright early afternoon light illuminates a wind-scoured research platform in South Australia, where a colossal pink flamingo wades through a shallow drizzle. The bird towers over the landscape, its long neck stretching high against the grey sky while its massive legs sink into the wet ground. Scattered across the concrete threshold are thousands of windblown cedar needles, glistening with raindrops. Converging lines of the observatory dome structure lead toward a distant vanishing point, showing the scale difference. The flamingo's feathers appear waterlogged and heavy, clumping together in shades of coral and rose. Tiny droplets rest on the rough texture of the cedar wood and the smooth, pale stone of the platform. The impossible scale of the bird contrasts sharply with the precise, disciplined architecture of the scientific station.
