Cold metal housings of scientific instruments rest beside the researcher, their surfaces beaded with condensation that catches the dim ambient light. The subject's gloved hand holds a pencil steady against the paper, showing the jagged geometry of a fault line exposed in the earth. Loose particles of dry, tan soil drift across the frame, suspended in the freezing air of dead winter. Faint breath vapor rises near the instrument lenses, merging with the dust cloud. The sketchbook pages show precise, dark lines mapping the geological fracture against the pale, swirling ground.
