Frozen Tarn in Ontario Cirque During Polar Night

by Tara Pratt

Steel-blue ambient light washes over a deep cirque bowl carved into the Ontario shoreline. A frozen tarn sits centered in the lower third, its surface a smooth sheet of ice reflecting the fading sky. Steep scree slopes rise sharply on either side, their gray rocks dusted with fresh white snow. Gentle flakes drift downward, softening the sharp edges of the stone faces. The water remains motionless, trapped beneath a layer of frost that mirrors the darkening horizon. Jagged ridges frame the basin, while loose scree slides down toward the ice, creating a textured contrast between the rough rock and the smooth frozen pool. A thin layer of snow rests on the lowest rocks near the water's edge.
