Frost Covered Pangolin Ball at Dawn in beside a tidal inlet in Tajikistan

Frost Covered Pangolin Ball at Dawn

by Norman Zuniga

Cold silver dawn light falls across a pangolin curled into a tight armored sphere. Overlapping keratin scales gleam with a dry, matte sheen, each plate edged in white hoar frost that crystallizes the texture. The ground beside the animal is hard and dusted with ice, marking the late spring chill before sunrise. Sparse, frost-laden grasses rise from the earth, their tips bent under the weight of frozen water. Behind the defensive ball, the background dissolves into a soft blur of a tidal inlet, where water reflects the pale, pre-dawn sky. One scale near the tail tip holds a fragile droplet of frozen dew, catching the silver light. Frost covers the grass and ground, proving the biting cold without air moving.
