First Light on Vendor in Lima

by Florence Nolan

Rain-slicked cobblestones in Lima’s historic center reflect the pale, diffused gray of early morning sky. A street vendor, wrapped in a thick woolen poncho, leans against a wrought-iron gate, wiping water from his face with a rough, damp towel edge draped over a nearby rail. Beside him, a plastic boot scraper filled with muddy water sits on the curb, its rubber bristles matted with grit. The ironwork of the gate shows patches of rust around hinge screws, against the smooth, wet stone. In the background, a white colonial facade with peeling pastel paint stands silent, while a lone broom rests against a doorway, its straw bristles splayed from use.
