Eucalyptus Regrowth After Fire on Nampula Cliff

by Soren Baxter

Pale blue-green eucalyptus saplings rise densely from blackened, charcoal-stained earth along a rugged cliff edge. The air shimmers with a visible heat haze that softens the distant horizon where the Mozambican coast meets the sky. Bright tropical light reflects off the smooth, waxy leaves of the new growth, creating sharp highlights against the dark, rough texture of the burnt bark. Salt spray has left a faint white residue on the lower branches and the reddish soil. Tall trunks stand in tight clusters, their slender forms reaching upward while the ground below remains scarred with ash and twisted roots. A stark contrast exists between the delicate new foliage and the heavy, dark remnants of the fire. One white bird rests on a charred branch at the very edge of the frame.
