Elephant on Rooftop and Balloon Shadow Fields
by Joe Munoz
Thick mist rests on the wind-open causeway near Pokhara, softening the noon glare into a diffused, silver wash. Below, patchwork fields stretch in geometric blocks of dry earth and faded green, their textures sharp despite the haze. A hot air balloon drifts low, its colorful envelope casting a distinct, dark shadow across the crops. In the background, perched calmly atop a traditional rooftop structure, a full-grown elephant stands with impossible stillness. Its wrinkled grey skin contrasts with the smooth tiles beneath it. The low angle emphasizes the balloon's massive scale against the sky, while the elephant remains a silent, grounded figure in the misty distance. The shadow edge cuts cleanly across the soil, marking the surreal meeting of air and earth.
